Description
The Cuica is one of the most distinctive instruments in Brazilian percussion, prized for its vocal-like squeaks, growls, and pitch bends. This Latin Percussion LP3408 model puts that sound in an 8″ ribbed brass shell measuring 10-1/2″ in depth, built to hold up under regular playing and travel.
Inside the drum, a stick is fastened to the center of the head. Rubbing this stick while pressing on the head from the opposite side with a damp cloth produces the Cuica’s signature friction-drum voice, with pitch and timbre shifting as you vary the pressure. The head itself is calf skin and comes with the stick pre-installed, so you can start experimenting with technique right away.
Tuning is handled by eight self-aligning drum key lugs, letting you dial in head tension evenly around the shell for consistent tone and easier adjustments. A nylon strap is included, giving you a comfortable way to hold and play the drum while standing or moving, which suits its use in samba lines and live percussion setups.
