The beyerdynamic A1 was engineered as a purpose-built partner for high-impedance, audiophile-grade headphones — including beyerdynamic’s own 600 ohm premium models. Its intelligent-circuit design reproduces an exceptionally wide frequency range, extending well beyond what the human ear can detect, and the full circuit path supports frequencies up to 96 kHz for uncompressed playback from sources like SA-CD or DVD Audio.
Inside, a generously sized toroidal core transformer works alongside carefully matched components to keep even the highest-impedance headphones performing accurately across the whole audio spectrum. A dedicated impedance-matched headphone output also keeps the volume control’s range usable and precise when pairing the A1 with lower-impedance headphones.
Volume adjustment runs through a high-grade ALPS potentiometer mounted behind the large aluminium front-panel knob, giving smooth, tactile control. Switching between the two available line inputs is handled by a micro-processor-controlled relay, which switches silently and eliminates the clicks and pops that can occur when powering the unit on or off. One of the two line inputs is hardwired straight through to the line output, so audio can pass through even while the A1 sits in standby — meaning it only needs to be powered up when you’re ready to actually listen through headphones.
Status indicators are kept simple: two blue LEDs show which input is active, while a multicolour LED reports the unit’s current operating state.
